Walking in Southern Wales

Wales is a land of mountains and countryside, whether you want to walk in a serious manner or just take a gentle stroll through breathtaking coastal or countryside scenery, then Southern Wales is the place for you!

There is ample opportunity for walking, from local leisurely strolls, to really adventurous long distant walks and with the new 'Right to Roam' law the whole of Southern Wales is your playground!

The valleys and mountains are covered with woodland routes that rise higher and higher until it's possible to gaze back down to the distant coastline. There are also ample walking opportunities from Cardiff, right along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast to Porthcawl and beyond. Spectacular coastal views and seascapes along with dramatic sunsets make it a superb choice.

There's a variety of clearly marked routes all around the region, and if you are an enthusiastic walker, there are sure to be many routes that will enthral and entertain you.

Some can be combined to create longer walks; some are on the flat, while others are more strenuous, taking in the higher levels, but be prepared as many walks are very isolated. A mobile phone would be an advantage on some routes as well as leaving details with someone.

Try the Taff Trail, which takes you from Wales' capital city of Cardiff, northwards along the lower Taff Valley and links into the Rhondda, probably the most famous valley in the World!

There are also local, self-guided walks around some of the town areas, like the Bridgend Heritage Walk, taking in the historical old centre of the town.

More detailed leaflets for all the walks can be obtained from any one of the local Tourist Information Centres.

Whether you want to do a long distance walk over hills and dales or just take a gentle stroll along the seafront or around the shops, Southern Wales can fulfil your every wish.
